    Bette’s Beginning Ch 9

They found an area a little way away from most of the people and settled down to just lie around, talk and soak up what was left of the days sunshine. They went for a swim just as the sun began to set into the water. They continued to swim for a while after the sun was down, until Bette got hit with a huge wave and dragged halfway back to shore. She stumbled up out of the water while Erin swam toward the shore. When Erin reached Bette she was sitting on the shore and coughing a bit from all the water she had inhaled.
She sat down next to Bette and rubbed her back as the brunette continued to cough and recover from the waves blow. You ok there?

Im simply marvelous, why do you ask? said Bette sarcastically before having another coughing fit. Erin reached over and rubbed Bette’s back, pulled a piece of sea weed out of Bettes hair, then tucked her mussed wet curls behind her ear.

The waves are pretty nice today though, said Bette as she watched a big set roll in.

Erin looked over at Bette in surprise, You surf?

Bette laughed at the look on Erins face, Yea, not very well though, I cant do anything crazy, I just know the basics.

Hmmm, Bette Porter the surfer, now theres a concept.

    What, dont you know how?

    Nope, never learned.

    You want to learn now?

Without a board? …heey, wait, you remember cat-call-boy? Maybe ***** give us a good deal. Erin started to laugh, grabbed Bette by the hand and pulled her to her feet.

A few minutes later they were standing in front of the surf shop looking at the rental boards. Bette quickly found one that was the right size for her and began to try and find one that would fit Erin.

From behind them they heard cat-call-boys melodious voice ask, Can I help you ladies? He was obviously trying to be slick and had no idea it was not working. In his vision of himself there was no half squeaky, cracking, half way through puberty voice, his beach bum outfit made him loon cool not ridiculous, and he was over six feet tall rather than five foot five inches. Bette and Erin glanced at each other, did their best to smother their smiles and turned to face the boy.

    1. AAHHH!! You have me sooo hooked girl!! I’m anxious to see who will make the first move! Hope you’ll update soon! As if you haven’t been writing enough girl! ;-)

    2. what fun! and the image of a young surfer girl bette! how fun! we see a lot of how bette feels, are those small gestures that erin does, does she feel the same way? i mean, she left her necklace… hmmmm! i eagerly await the next one!

    3. It’s cool that they best friends but I think Erin knows what she is doing. As for as the progression, it going at a cool paste but it would be good if things picked up a little bit. Good Job.

    4. I’ve been remiss and haven’t left comments lately, but hopefully this starts to make up for it. Lost, I completely love this story. It just makes me giddy! (Which is no small feat with me.) You are doing a truly wonderful job with the characters, and I have no problem that you take your time with the timeline. Even sticking with a single day, you give enough attention to detail, provide enough dialogue, and give us some depth to the characters that the lack of time progression is utterly irrelevant. (Heck, look at “24” on TV and know that, if well done, time doesn’t need to pass quickly.) This story is just too fun. I adore it. So keep up your good work, follow your imagination, and enjoy yourself. Because you know we certainly do! Thanks so much for writing this story!

    5. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Erin gave up the necklace without a second thought. Doesn’t seem like Mike is anywhere near the forefront of her thoughts. And she’s spending her Friday with her best bud instead of her BF…as if he’s an inconvenience. I don’t know. Very interesting. Can’t wait to see how this turns out.
