My Skin is Painfully New–Chapter 3
Bette unlocked the front door of the house, brushing past the curling brown leaves of the fichus plant, another casualty of Tinas absence. As she dropped her bag inside the door, she noticed the flashing of her answering machine.
Um, hi Bette, its me. Bettes heart skipped a beat and her pulse began to race as though shed just finished a long workout. This was the first message Tina had left in five months and Bette moved closer to the machine in order to catch every word.
I was wondering if maybe we could have lunch tomorrow, or Sunday if that works better for you. .Id like to talk. My number is 781-545-0176. Ok, bye then.
Bette stood at the machine, touching it as though Tina were inside. Her heart was in her throat and she knew she needed a minute before she rang Tina. The phone number, previously forbidden to be released to Bette by any of their friends, was already committed to Bettes memory. She pressed save and took the phone out of its recharging station. She caught a glimpse of herself in the hall mirror. She saw the anxious, yet hopeful expression on her face. Then she saw the bite mark just under her ear–a bright flaming red mark, her souvenir from NYC. She averted her eyes from her reflection and brought her hand up to feel the heat rising on her cheeks. What the ***** is wrong with me, she muttered to herself, more a statement than a question.
She dialed the number.
***
Hey Bette, said Tina opening the door with a small smile, come on it.
Thanks. This is nice Tina, she commented while tentatively walking into the apartment.
You look beautiful, she said while taking in Tinas longer blonde hair, curling gently around her face, and her v-neck shirt that accented her *****, swollen in her almost sixth month of pregnancy. Are you feeling okay? she questioned, looking at the roundness of Tinas abdomen and mentally restraining her hand from reaching out to touch it.
Tina blushed slightly, noticing the intensity of Bettes eyes on her body. Yeah, everything is going well, she said with a smile. Can I get you something to drink?

I can’t wait to see where this story goes. I like this new independent Tina. I wonder if Bette is gonna is gonna try to put up a fight with Helena, or if she’s just gonna let Tina move on? I’ve got my fingers crossed that Bette puts up a fight.
that’s so AweSOME! the way you’ve layered this story, the pace is great, I really like how direct Tina is. I can see it all play out in my head and the dialogue is very good. Keep writing please!!
Have been doing some catching up on your story. Great job by the way. This is quite a blow out for Bette. Tina with someone else. Post soon
Helena is going to take everything that Bette loves. Her wife, her child and her job. Love this story, glad that Tina cared enough to tell Bette Face to Face. I;m reading a Rita Mae Brown and & Sneaky Pie brown book now. Got all of then. thank so much
Excellent story, definitely leaves me wanting more…..
go girl loving it
Ahh I was right there with Bette and then Bam shot down. But then where would the drama be? Love your style by the way.
I like the way you deliver the story,it grabs & demands attention.
I feel really sorry 4 Bette she is really hurt and I guess Tina is only telling her the true…great Chapter!
I like the way this story is developing. Keep going girl!
This is a great story, but (please don’t think this is a criticism) the first chapter you wrote could fit in well again as the story flows to that time when they are attending the dinner, just thought it would bring a time flow into the story as it starts in the future then looks back. Great writing and emotion too, Bette really feels lost. I want to know how Tina feels after seeing Bette in the bedroom!
aw man…..damn….
Excellent and so sad – thank you !
NOTE TO JOBADGE: Thanks for your comments! Actually, I wrote “My Skin is Painfully New” as a stand-alone chapter, then was inspired to fill in the gaps. So, yes, a reworked “My Skin” will be a future chapter in this story. Stay tuned. (And also, a note to the reader who asked if Bette’s trip to Rubyfruit was based on an actual bar–well I seem to recall in my youth that there was a bar called Rubyfruit somewhere! But clearly it is a nod to Rita Mae Brown. Still the hottest Lesbian writer out there!)
Sigh. I knew Bette would find out in this kind of way. Here comes the breaking heart
