Five Times Bella Swan Died and One Time She Didn't
2nd Time
Snow and Ice and Everything Nice.
If she had heard the screech of the tires sooner, or not been so caught up in her emotions over snow chains she might not have been there at that very second. But she hadn’t heard the tires and she had been caught up in thoughts of Charlie and when she’d spun to see what everyone else was already seeing, it was too late.
It didn’t hurt, not in the way she thought it would. She felt…nothing. The impact of being crushed between two large, metal vehicles was arduous and tiring–but not painful per say. She heard breaking bones and smelt her own blood. It made her a little sick, the rustiness of it, but still the pain wasn’t there. She felt like she’d been sitting in a tub of ice for a week—she was completely numb.
The only thing that did hurt was the burning need to breath. Bella gasped for a breathe, choking on red liquid. That wasn’t good, that couldn’t be a good sign. She tried to focus on what that meant…did she have blood in her stomach? Or her lungs? Which was worse?
Suddenly she was converged upon. Voices were calling out her name and yelling for her. It was hard to focus on any one thing; it was all like a blur. Except…something did stand out. A pair of topaz eyes stared at her from yards away, they drew her in so deeply she couldn’t even feel the burn for oxygen anymore. Edward Cullen was staring at her and his eyes had entranced her, but they were completely unreadable. She couldn't understand what the look he was giving her meant.
“There’s so much blood!”
“Someone call 911!”
“Is Tyler okay?”
“Bella, can you hear me!”
There were so many voices, all trying to get her focus. Bella wanted to say something, to get them all to calm down so she could think, but words wouldn’t form on her lips. Every time she tried only blood came out. It was utterly frustrating.
“Bella.” A musical voice called out her name. It was soft and afraid. She zeroed in on it, seeing Edward and his golden eyes still staring at her. They looked so sad, so torn. She wanted to say something to him, but strength was leaving her. Her vision tunneled and the sounds around her all became indistinguishable until they quieted down completely.
A sense of calm flooded her as she fell into darkness, one word managing to escape with her dying breath. Edward.
